Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy in the Saudi EFL Classrooms

Bloom’s taxonomy was developed in the 1950’s and is still used today to categorize ways of learning and              thinking in a hierarchical structure. A revised model was developed in the 1990’s to better-fit educational practices of the 21st century. Teachers can employ the revised Bloom’s taxonomy in the Saudi EFL Classrooms to help plan effective instruction and challenge students to move from the most basic skills (remembering) to more complex learning which leads to higher order thinking (creating).

Bloom's six major categories were changed from noun to verb forms.

Bloom's Digital Taxonomy isn't about the tools or technologies rather it is about using these to facilitate    learning. Outcomes on rubrics are measured by competence of use and most importantly the quality of the process or product. For example. Bookmarking a resource is of no value if the resource is inappropriate, invalid, out of date or inaccurate. Bloom's Revised Taxonomy describes many traditional classroom practices, behaviors and actions, but does not account for the new processes and actions associated with Web 2.0 technologies, infowhelm (the exponential growth in information), increasing ubiquitous personal technologies or cloud computing. The learners have to think to learn by themselves.
Bloom's Digital Taxonomy lends itself to problem and project based learning where the student must work through the entire process of development and evaluation.
So, Bloom’s Taxonomy is very well evident in setting learning objectives in the Saudi EFL classrooms. It is necessary for teachers to use it in their classrooms. Because It  provides  an organizational  structure  that  gives  a  commonly understood  meaning  to objectives  classified  in  one of  its  categories,  thereby  enhancing  communication which can improve the students' critical thinking.
I  as a teacher will utilize Bloom’s Taxonomy to improve my instructions and my students’ achievement but first I want you to remember that
·         Blooms Taxonomy was originally created Benjamin Bloom for categorizing and classifying the levels of intellectual learning that commonly occur in the classroom setting.
So first :
1-      It is important that I do not just teach lower order thinking skills at the bottom of Blooms Taxonomy such as knowledge and comprehension, but also teach higher order thinking skills at the top of blooms taxonomy such as synthesis and evaluation.
2-      When students are using the higher order thinking skills they are more likely to retain information, perform better on standardized tests, and most importantly, achieve the ultimate goal of becoming lifelong learners.

How would English language teacher use blogs, wikis and delicious with their students?

If I am a teacher I would use technology in my teaching English language to my students to improve my students learning and increase my students knowledge and proficiency . In addition, I would use different kind of tools to help me for example; I would use blogs, wikis, and delicious. Because today Technology plays very important role in the classroom and can be used to teach important concepts, and can provide learners with increased exposure to English language.
As teachers we can use blogs, wikis, and delicious .
Therefore, these are examples of activities in each tool:
                   1-Blogs:
The teacher ask the students to Create a blog at blogger, Check on their classmates 'blogs, Follow all of them,  ask them to Post a comment on for example at least 2 blogs of their classmates. In addition, ask them to read for example articles and reflect on it and then post it to their blogs.
2- Wikis:
The teachers ask her students to join Pbworks (Wikis), upload a photo to the photos’ area. And, introduce themselves to the group, following the teacher’s introduction. And Start reading others’ introductions, then reply to   thier colleagues introductions. Also, she can ask her students to join to group they want. And she ask them to subscribe some websites related to something the teacher ask for it. The teacher can also put the assignment, schedules and any handouts and ask the students to go for it.
3- Delicious:
The teacher  first teaches  her students how to create an account at delicious and connect it with twitter or facebook , then help them to start bookmarking the links of for example ; their private blogs and wikis , they can add links of any subject the teacher ask to search for in the internet and they find it good and want to share it with others.

"The Possiblity of Reaching Bax’s Normilasation in our national context: Why is it possible? When is it possible/reached/achieved?How will it be reached?

Stephan Bax argues that, "Our aim should be to attain a state of `normalisation' in which the technology is invisible and truly integrated"

In the article “CALL—past, present and future” by Stephan Bax.

He identified the end goal for CALL through the concept of " normalisation" . So, he suggested many ways to attain a state of normalisation in which the technology is invisible and truly integrated. He suggested to plan for this normalised state and then move towards it.

v What dose he mean?

It means to reach a level in using technology in learning  and teaching to the point that it is taking for granted. Bax summarized that in three steps:

1-     First step is to identify the criterial factors which normalisation requires.

2-     Second is to audit the practice of each teaching context in the light of these criteria;

3-      the final step is to adjust our current practice in each aspect   to encourage normalisation”

Finally, he mentioned the seven stages of normalization in CALL from early adaptors, ignorance/scepticism, try once, try again, fear/awe, normalising, until we finally reach normalization.

The possible future for CALL according to Bax :

"Our aim is to reach normalisation in which CALL can becomes invisible , serving the needs of learners and integrated into every teachers’every day practice ".This require changes in technology and attitudes

v How these changes and means could be applied to our Saudi context?

Saudi Arabia is a developing and a modern country that has a lot of  abilities and  achievements and the education systems in it is  progressing  over time . So, I think It will not be difficult to  achieve normalisation but in the same time it will not  an easy task .

v How will it be reached?

First we have to do many changes in the education systems:

1-      First, teach students to use communication websits as twitter and face book to communicate with the help of the teacher
2-       Second, computers should be used in classroom context as a tool to improve and facilitate learning.

3-       Finally, provide schools and universities with equipments such as , smart board, projector, and laptop. However, to make the use of technology invisible is not going to be an easy task.

4-      the most important thing I would mention that the technology that we need dose not omit the role of the teacher . I think our need for teachers and technology are the same.

5-      Some teachers do not know how to make use of technology In their classes and the penifits of it for both the teacher and the student . So, they should take courses to learn it and also to learn how to make use of communication websits and also for the upcoming teachers .

vWhen is it possible/reached/achieved?
I hope this will be achieved fast to be able to start the next phase: integrating technology in all our schools.

I am really optimistic about what will happen in KSA  soon .  I think changes in educational technology is happening really fast. For example, when I was in elementary school, the only tools were used in teaching were books and pens and the traditional teaching methods. As soon as I entered   middle and  high school, teachers were using computers, laptops, projectors, and sometimes internet, but not all the time . Now, using laptops in the classrooms are a normal and hardly recognized thing in universities.

 Note:

We all as a Saudi community must try to observe other countries that are well developed in this area and benefit from their experiences and establishments. Obviously before all that, we need to put a clear, organized plan that we can follow to reach the normalization we hope for in a short time.
